Murdo McDermid

Murdo is an Architect at GRAS and also serves as an in-house photographer for GRAS and Groves-Raines Architects Ltd.

Before joining GRAS as a Part I Architectural Assistant in January 2011, whilst studying for his undergraduate degree at the University of Edinburgh, Murdo gained experience working in Sweden and a number of practices in Edinburgh of varying size and across a range of sectors. His photography has been featured in a number a major architectural, and lifestyle magazines and websites, helping to promote the work of Groves-Raines and his other clients. Murdo also has a keen interest in photography as an experimental process, and the intersection of photography and architectural narrative.

After completing his undergraduate studies, Murdo returned to the University of Edinburgh to join the new ESALA programme, where he obtained his Part II qualification through a two year study of the socioeconomics and architectural intricacies of Lisbon, Portugal. He was also a key member of the Edinburgh University Student Architecture Society (EUSAS), heading up a redesign of promotional material for the weekly lecture series and aiding in the running of EUSAS’s various social media platforms.

Murdo re-joined GRAS in 2014 as a Part II Architectural Assistant, receiving his registration as a fully qualified Architect in 2019. He has a keen interest in sustainability and believes this is best achieved by prolonging the life of existing structures through conscientious renovation and retro-fitting, whilst responding sensitively to existing site conditions.
