Tim Taylor, Associate at GRAS, shows new artwork “SPENT (Monument to a time when we no longer need to measure oil)” in the grounds of Edinburgh’s iconic Scottish Widows building as part of the annual Hidden Door Festival. 250 car dipsticks are planted in the grass, their varied and coloured heads swaying gently on the breeze. Instruments of measurement, these simple strips of metal are given a new lease of life in an optimistic work that looks to the future demise of our reliance on oil. He compares it to a field of poppies. This installation is particularly pertinent to the Scottish Widows site as it is situated on the corner of Edinburgh’s new low emission zone.

Alongside his architectural practice Tim has been making and showing art work for the past twenty years. His work takes various forms – principally sculpture, film & print work. This has often overlapped with architecture, with some 50 works permanently embedded in healthcare centres in the Greater Glasgow region. He was part of our involvement with the British Council’s Maker Library project, showing work in the Vitra Design Museum in Germany and a key member in the creation of our Galleria Temporanea for the Venice Biennale 2012.  He has had four solo shows at Custom Lane since its inception in 2017.

“SPENT (Monument to a time when we no longer need to measure oil)” by Tim Taylor is on show at 15 Dalkeith Rd during Hidden Door festival, until 4th of June, 2023.
