EAA Awards 2021 commendation for Treen

The Edinburgh Architectural Association has awarded a commendation EAA Awards 2021 for vegan fashion retailer Treen’s flagship store, located in the heart of Stockbridge, Edinburgh.
The architectural language aims to reflect the brand’s sustainable ethos, with the emphasis on the warm, natural material choices like clay plaster and Scottish ash wood. Extensive removal of previous internal linings/alterations revealed softly curved walls and multi-layered textures – reaching back to its original use – the grocery store. Subtly textured clay plaster was laid onto stripped back and newly recovered surfaces. Bespoke, blackened steel railing organically follows the curvature of the walls, setting datum that guides the journey through the store. The shelving and countertop showcase the beauty of the natural, oil-treated material, designed with tactile experiences in mind.

All fixtures and furniture were custom designed and made by local craftsmen, resulting in harmonious, carefully curated space. The holistic design and installation approach taken resulted in a rich, yet highly efficient process, creating a shorthand between designer and tradesman, placing the client at the centre of the explorative discussions. Judges commented;
“Treen is exactly as you see it, but it is delivering so many core messages. It has a role in the urban grain of an existing neighbourhood, it is contributing to an active street frontage, putting architecture in the urban realm. It highlights the massively important role of engaging with the supply chain at an early stage, utilising local skilled crafts people, a duty to specify natural materials, all while contributing to the holistic sustainable brand of the clients’ business.”
