GRAS joined the Scottish Vernacular Buildings Working Group

We’ve joined the Scottish Vernacular Buildings Working Group, a community of researchers, craftspeople and practitioners committed to recording and caring for Scotland’s traditional buildings.
Crofts, steadings, byres, village halls and other modest structures carry knowledge shaped by climate, necessity and material memory. Built from what was at hand, they reflect long-standing relationships between people, landscape and craft.
Our collective understanding of vernacular architecture is shifting. Rather than viewing it as static heritage, we see it as a living resource. Its quiet intelligence offers insight into sustainable building methods, repair traditions and the cultural role of architecture.
We’re looking forward to contributing to ongoing conversations through shared research, site visits and glimpses into current and future work shaped by these themes.
